Q & A with Dr. Kristie Steele

When did you know you wanted to be a vet?

Growing up, my family nicknamed me Snow White because, much like the beloved Disney princess, animals seemed to naturally flock to me. Even as a toddler, I couldn’t wait to step outside and feed the squirrels, birds, chipmunks, and even frogs—they were my first friends. My love for animals has been a lifelong passion, and becoming a veterinarian was always my dream. I truly can’t imagine doing anything else!
Tell us about your first pet?

Even before I was born, I had a furry companion—Tabby, our family cat, who was there to welcome me into the world and stayed by my side through my early childhood. When I turned five, our family grew with Pepper, a lively Schnauzer who became my best friend. But to me, all the outdoor animals—birds, squirrels, and even frogs—felt like part of my extended pet family too. Animals have always been a cherished part of my life.
What did you like the most about vet school?

Becoming a Vet!
What is your favorite thing to do with your patients?

As the sole veterinarian at the practice, one of the things I cherish most is getting to see the same patients regularly. I love building bonds with both the pets and their families, watching them grow from playful puppies or kittens into adults. It’s incredibly rewarding! Though, if I had a little extra time and a good stereo system, I might just say my favorite thing would be hosting a pet dance party!
What should every pet owner know?

Pet insurance is a real and valuable resource, and every new pet owner should consider it! Just like humans, pets need regular check-ups to stay healthy—you don’t have to wait until they’re sick to visit the vet. Additionally, dental care, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm prevention are essential for keeping your furry friends happy and healthy. Don't overlook these important aspects of pet care!
How long have you been a Veterinarian?

I graduated from Ross University in 2005, hard to believe 20 years ago.
Why did you choose West Milford for your practice?

West Milford has always been home to me. I’ve lived here my entire life and attended West Milford High School, where I was proud to be first chair clarinet in the band. I love this community, and now, as a parent with a daughter attending school here, it feels even more special. Opening my veterinary practice in West Milford was a natural choice—it’s where my heart is, and I’m grateful to serve the pets and families of my hometown.

What are your hopes for the future?

I plan to be here for a very, very long time! My goal is to continue practicing veterinary medicine well into my old age—it's safe to say you won’t be getting rid of me anytime soon. Now, who are my pets? Aside from all the outdoor animals (wink), I share my life with my cats, Snowball, Lily, and Moon Beam, as well as my loyal German Shepherds, Elsa Amber and Karma. They’re a cherished part of my family!
